Jamal R. Watkins

Chief of Staff

In his role as Chief of Staff, Mr. Watkins is responsible for providing programmatic leadership through the management of all program staff. This includes but is not limited to strategy development, program management, organizational networking, alliance building and relationship management. Jamal has a strong and proven non-profit program management background in the racial justice field, including development and deployment of policy reform advocacy strategies, partnership cultivation and development and management of staff team collaboration.

Prior to joining CSI, Jamal served as the head of Campaigns at Amnesty International, USA, where he was primarily responsible for developing “high-impact” campaigns and communications strategies for the international human rights organization’s USA section. Jamal has also held leadership positions within several organizations such as the NAACP, City Year, Stanford University and Teach For America. He has also served as a National Recruiter for the DNC, Fundraising Canvass Director for Grassroots Campaigns DNC Project, Florida State Director of the Young Voter Alliance during the 2004 Presidential Election, Regional Coordinator on the “Yes on Proposition 79” Campaign for Health Access of California, and most recently developed a voter mobilization and engagement field strategy for the 2012 California Death Penalty Ballot initiative.

Jamal has completed graduate level work at New York University for Speech and Interpersonal Communication and earned his B.A. in Philosophy at Stanford University with a minor in Political Science. He is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
